Monitoring
the health of your lake or pond is the single most important task in
any management program. You cannot manage,
repair, or improve something you do not know and understand, though,
if Dilbert is correct, corporate America tries to do this all the time
and
we all know where that can lead.
LAPA-West provides its members with the necessary tools, information,
and training to establish and maintain an effective monitoring program.
These resources are available through the Lake Steward Program.
The Lake Steward Program consists of the Lake Steward, Dr. Jim Philips
of Westfield State College, three sets of sampling equipment, and
a set of
Standard Operating Procedures, SOPs, which have been approved by
the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
The Lake Steward provides on site training and advising services on
an as- needed basis. The sampling equipment is available through
the Lake Steward, John Hickey (Pittsfield area), and Rich Gallup
(Big
Pond In Otis), and is shared on a first-come first-served basis amongst
the LAPA-West member associations. See the CONTACTS page
for contact information. The SOPs can be referred to for refresher
training
and as a guide
to effective
sampling technique.
